Strength Training: 4 Benefits Of Strength Training For Women

By Deb Conn

In the olden days, it was assumed that strength training was for men ony. We equated strength training with pictures of grotesquely over built, oily, fake-baked men in tiny little Speedos! But today we have come to understand that those were extreme examples of body building which had nothing to do with health or fitness!

Below I will describe four of the benefits of strength training for women.

1. Strength training speeds up your metabolism which leads to increased fat burning. Combining strength training with cardio will lead to more and quicker fat loss than cardio alone. And because muscle tissue even burns calories when at rest, the more muscle you add the more fat you burn!

2. Strength training fights osteoporosis. Working your muscles in a targeted, intense way increases bone density by increasing the pull on the bones to which the muscles are attached.

3. Strength training improves balance. In addition to building stronger bones and muscles, you also are building stronger tendons and ligaments. As you become stronger, you are also getting more coordinated and so less likely to fall and hurt yourself. If you do fall, the muscle tissue you have in place will act as padding for your joints and bones.

4. Strength training helps you to look and feel better. You will reduce body fat and build up lean muscle. Firm, toned muscles pad your skin and prevent jiggly arms and droopy skin. You feel confident and energized. Your posture is even improved by strength training!

When designing your fitness program, be sure to include strength training as well as cardio for the best all around routine for total body fitness. Be sure to ask your doctor or a fitness professional for advice on setting up your strength training program. - 30426
